Poshmark is my favorite platform to sell my clothes and accessories. It is easy to use and has excellent customer service. In this post, I am going to continue to share with you how Poshmark operates and what it takes to be successful on this platform.
This blog post is about all that I have learned about how to be successful on Poshmark.
(So let’s pick up right where we left off)
9. Be strategic with lowering prices:
A price drop is when you decide to lower the price of an item, pretty self-explanatory. But in order for that to generate a notification to all those who have liked your item, it has to be by at least 10% of the price. Poshmark occasionally then offers discounted shipping. This can act as a motive, the same way people respond to sales in general.
An offer is when you privately offer to those who liked your item a certain lower price only visible to them, it is a binding offer for 24 hours, meaning you cannot retract it and it has to be lower by 10%. You also have to select a discounted shipping option in this case. This also acts as an incentive to buy your item as you can tell.
In both cases, you have to be strategic about when to take action. You are more likely to sell using any of these two strategies on Sunday morning vs Monday morning, these are two extreme examples. But the idea is that people are more likely to be on their phones, browsing, shopping or even noticing your notifications on Sunday morning vs Monday when they are busy at work.
10. You got an offer:
Great! Almost there. Someone is offering you an X amount of money for something that you bought from the store, it has been siting in your closet for a certain period of time, or you’ve already worn this piece. Be nice to them, unless they are low balling, accept the offer or counter offer if you want to. I have almost always regretted the offers I didn’t take. Those items have gone for less than the initial offer I received and turned down. Don’t get me wrong, if I am being lowballed, I don’t even respond to the offer, but you get the gist.
11. First sale – packing, notes and shipping:
Yay for making your first sale! Before I start packing my item, I review the listing to make sure I include everything I promised I would. I also take one last look at the item to make sure the condition hasn’t changed. Most of my wrapping paper is re-used from my own orders. I stay away from wrapping paper in bright colors, as I’ve heard of horror stories about color transfer.
Thank you notes and small gifts go a long way. The reality is that you do not need to ship the item any better than how clothing companies ship. But this is the fun part for me. I usually pick a thank you card and say something like “Dear X, thank you so much for stopping by and purchasing my item. Enjoy wearing it! Best, Girl on the Upper East Side”. The gift can be a beauty sample or a small candy. The point is just to show the buyer that you appreciate the purchase.
Your label is ready, so don’t go to the post office purchasing a shipping label. You can print it and ship your item; you can also go to the post office with the QR code and have them scan it and print the label for you. You can ship your items in a regular shipping box (hopefully you are reusing one), but you can also visit the post office website and have them deliver priority mail boxes to you for free, the price is included in the label that the buyer pays.
12. Issues with delivery or your item:
Buyers have three days to inspect and bring any issues with your item to you and Poshmark. After that the funds are released to you as a seller. I find Poshmark to be incredibly fair when dealing with issues.
I have bought things and was allowed to return them when major defects were not disclosed or the item was counterfeit. Alternatively, that could happen to you as a seller. I once listed a pair of boots and didn’t pay attention to the European size conversion when selecting the US size on Poshmark, the size wasn’t accurate based on the brand’s sizing guide. The buyer opened a case, the boots were returned to me at no cost and I re-listed and sold them.
Your item could get lost on the way, make sure to hold on to the receipt until Poshmark picks up on your tracking and thanks you for shipping. I once had a designer bag get lost after the first delivery was attempted to the buyer. The box was nowhere to be found, I ended it up getting paid in full and the buyer’s funds were returned, it was a big relief.
It is very difficult for me to list the cons for Poshmark, yes the 20% of your profit is a lot of money to give up on, but I personally don’t mind that. I have used several other platforms, but none provide the ease and safety net that Poshmark provides.
13. Get organized:
Having a dedicated box of shipping supplies is really helpful and can help you become more efficient and organized. Mine holds all of my tapes, wrapping paper, thank you cards and the small gifts (ranging from beauty samples, candy, and random things gifted to me). I also have a range of USPS boxes ready to go. I try to re-use wrapping paper, bubble wrap and boxes whenever I get them in my own online orders. I have not purchased much of my packing supplies. Many of those items are reusable as I’ve mentioned. I also collect free postcards when offered at stores, restaurants and online orders. Your profits are probably marginal, especially when you first start, so you don’t want an additional expense.
14. Your reputation as a seller:
People will be looking at your reviews and love notes. Love notes are when a buyer is giving you a 5 star rating, they have the option to post a public comment expressing their experience.
Be sure to always be transparent in your listings as it reflects on your reviews. Potential buyers can also scan your profile for how you handle questions, and previously sold listings for any issues between you and the buyer of that given item.
People who have questions are genuinely interested in your item. More often than not, they will purchase your item after they hear back from you. Get back to them as quickly as you can, even if you can’t really help them with their request or question. No one wants to make a purchase from someone who is MIA.
15. Your closet, your rules:
I mean only to a certain extent. Poshmark pretty much takes the guess work out of us. However, you can choose to handle a few things differently. Buyers have three hours to cancel their order on Poshmark, after that it is up to the seller if the buyer asks for a cancellation. I chose not to cancel orders, because more often than not I have accepted a lower than listed price and if I relist the item, it will most certainly sell for even less. Your previous sales do not disappear from your closet. I have a dedicated post about this in my closet, because I want people to know before they make a purchase.
16. Goals in moving up the ladder:
Anyone can have an account and start buying or selling. The next step after this is becoming a Poshmark Ambassador. You need to hit a few benchmarks before you get there: (1) You need to share at least 5000 listings on the platform (this is the only time I’d recommend getting on the computer as it is easier to share), (2) 50 shares from new members, (3) Have at least 50 items in your inventory, (4) Make 15 sales, (5) Have at least an average of 4.5 stars purchase rating, (6) An average ship time of less than 3 days, (7) Have at least one Love Note from another posher.
You might be asking why do all this extra work? Once you become an ambassador, Poshmark will add an ambassador logo next to your name, and your closet will be suggested to all the new users. You will gain followers without putting in any extra work. More followers mean, your items gain extra visibility, you know the rest by now.
17. How to handle your funds:
You can choose to have your funds sit in your account until you use them towards a purchase of your own. You can also send them to your own Venmo, PayPal, or bank account. I transfer all my funds to my checking account as I don’t like to have funds sitting in an account outside of my bank. I also don’t like to get into the habit of buying things with existing credit, as I might not think through the purchase as well as I would if I were spending out of pocket.
