If you love the Tiffany Bean Necklace but aren’t sure about the price tag, keep reading. I will tell you can have this at a fraction of its price.
The Bean shape by Elsa Peretti, arguably one of the best jewelry designers in history, is as iconic as it can be. I remember going to Tiffany’s at their Landmark location many times to try out different variations in gold, smaller sizes, you name it. But I really had a soft spot for their silver 50 mm Bean with a silk cord. Which is odd, because silver is not my go to metal, but for some reason I had also been wanting a silver Elsa Peretti piece for a very long time. Their silver pieces tend to be almost everyone’s first piece they invest in at Tiffany’s, and I had skipped that step.
So when I saw this hack, I didn’t really think twice. Madison Avenue Spy introduced me to this idea through one of her Reels on Instagram, I was sold. I am going to explain what this hack is, and everything you need to do to get this necklace. I also made an instagram reel you might be interested in checking out.
This blog post is all about how to get the Tiffany Bean Necklace at a fraction of its price. I hope you enjoy it!
WHAT IS THE HACK?
Tiffany sells the Bean necklace pendant in a nearly identical shape and size in a key chain. The key chain is merely a leather cord that you can cut or undo and there you have the pendant ready to serve as a necklace.
HOW TO GET THE TIFFANY BEAN KEY CHAIN?
Once this hack was discovered and content creators started making videos online, Tiffany no longer made this item available online. At least that is what has happened so far, as I write this blog post. When you click on the item, it advises you to call customer service to place the order. I did just that. The item was on back order for around two months, but one popped up sooner and I received it in a two week time frame. Alas, with some defect, I returned it and ordered another one straight from their warehouse, brand (spanking) new.
WHAT YOU NEED FOR THIS PROJECT?
- A tweezer or thin metal piece like the screw driver you use to tighten glasses’ screws
- A silk cord. I used this and ordered it from Amazon, but feel free to use any type of cord that will pass through the holes.
HOW TO UNDO THE LEATHER KNOT?
You need to undo the knot at the bottom of the key chain, not the top part where supposedly your keys would go. No one really warned me, but this is quite a project and the hardest part to work on. I gave myself a small cut and ruined my nail polish trying to undo the leather knot. It is very tight. I tried to use a tweezer or any thin metal piece, and when I did I was very cautious not to scratch the Bean. They didn’t really help. What actually helped was making the leather knot a bit wet, and pushing the bottom piece into the knot to loosen it. It finally worked, I was able to get the Bean out safely.
THREAD THE SILK CORD
This is simple-ish. I measured the cord itself around my neck and where I wanted it to land approximately and marked the edge of the cord and cut it.
The Bean, which is now essentially a pendant waiting to go on a chain or cord, already has two holes made for you. All you need to do is pass the cord through the holes. This isn’t hard but the silk cord bears no weight and the Bean is entirely hollow, so it will take a few attempts to get it to pass all the way out, sometimes it can loop inside. I used a tweezer as soon as I saw a little piece sticking out.

BEAN ON CORD
Ok, now you have the pendant on a cord, all you need to do is figure out a lock system.
LOOP AND KNOT
I wanted this to look as organic as possible, without metal or hardware. I wanted to mimic the real deal, the Tiffany Bean necklace on silk cord. I recognized that it is made with a loop and knot so I went to YouTube and read some blog posts to try and figure this out. The most important step was finding out the type of knot and loop made and their names, because I stumbled on many different types. It is also important to mention that you are making a loop and knot using a single cord on each side, many videos online use two cords to demonstrate this, that’s not useful for this project. I was also nervous and a bit skeptical because I didn’t want this to get loose and fall off! The videos I used are below, they were so easy to follow.

FINISHED PRODUCT
Ok, I was so impressed by the end of this project. The loop and knot seemed to hold well but still I had not worn this for an entire day to see how well it holds. But I did eventually, I have now worn this for a handful of times as I write this and I consider it my summer necklace though there is nothing seasonal about it.
COMPARED TO THE REAL NECKLACE
This key chain Bean is not the exact same thing as the necklace pendant. There are some things you should probably know. First, no one knows the difference just by looking at your necklace whether it’s a key chain turned into a necklace or the real deal. I get compliments on this all the time, even by former and current Tiffany employees. No one knows at first glance. The Bean is also signed at the back the same way the necklace pendant is.
However, the real necklace pendant is made with some thought to serve as a pendant, of course, this is a Tiffany item. It is actually flatter in the back so it doesn’t move as much and sits against your skin. I have adjusted my necklace a couple of times when wearing it, but that doesn’t bother me at all.
SENTIMENTS AROUND THIS HACK
Tiffany is actually aware of this hack. When I placed this order, the associate helping me over the phone was aware and actually told me about it herself. The store associate I spoke with after buying this key chain was also aware. Perhaps that explains why they stopped making this key chain available online, only through customer service to add an extra step and encourage people to buy the necklace instead, which is also a hot commodity as it is the necklace of the season as I write this.
SAVING $875
The necklace is listed for $1275 + tax, and the key chain for $400 + tax. While 1275 is not an astronomical price for a Tiffany item if you love this piece, it is for a silver pendant on a cord in my opinion. Tiffany is known for their quality and customer service, and I am absolutely a fan. So if I can get the same look and own an original Elsa Peretti piece at $435.50 (saving $875), I am going to do just that. Mind you, this isn’t a dupe and that’s the best part of it all.
KEEP ME POSTED
