West Village Vintage Stores are high-quality thrift and consignment stores, so I had heard. I decided to explore them. I just said West Village, yes, as non-native New Yorkers call it.
Whenever you are on the hunt to find high-quality gems, unfortunately but true, you have to visit more wealthy neighborhoods where residents regularly shop at high end stores, and are more likely to then sell or donate these items. I’m not a real estate agent, but few places are more expensive to live in than West Village in the city. It is charming with its boutique stores and cafés and old brownstone buildings. So even if you visit the stores and don’t find anything, it’s still a day well spent; I promise.
Whenever I think about vintage and second-hand shopping west village vintage stores always come to mind. I have been told they’re great but I had never shopped. Here is my experience at each one of them.
This blog post is all about west village vintage stores. Let’s go through each one of them.
#1 HAMLET’S VINTAGE
Oh, what a pleasant surprise. This is a vintage shop that sells clothing and accessories from the 1940’s to 1980’s for men and women. Some items are from big fashion houses and some are high-quality vintage items. This was my first stop and I have to say I wasn’t planning on spending that much time in here, or buying anything. But when a men’s vintage Burberry blazer fits you like a tailor had worked its magic; you buy the blazer. I cannot believe it took me this long to discover this place. The owner curates each item in the store, all the staff are very friendly and give you the space you need to shop alone. They always have discounts if you buy more than one item; and some items go on sale after a certain while. Things that stood out to me were the men’s blazer section full of YSL, Dior and Burberry pieces, Dior and Burberry trenches, plenty of vintage pants, skirts and T-shirts. I’m going to go back for a visit soon.

#2 BEACON’S CLOSET
Hidden gems may be found in here. But unfortunately, it’s a lot of fast fashion with some mid-range brands. Like I spotted a Mansur Gavriel Mini Bucket Bag in Patent Pink (a very old style) in here, and some Dr Martens’ boots. So, I’m sure you’ll find some things in here if you look. But I visited on a Friday afternoon and it was packed.

#3 THRIFT NYC
An interesting selection of clothes, I saw many Levi’s jeans and cool t-shirts. A big selection of military print jackets. It seems to be a very popular store. Prices are a bit high compared to what you can find online, but at least you can try them on and buy what really fits. It felt a bit niche, and many of their customers seem to be recurrent shoppers.

#4 HOUSING WORKS THRIFT SHOPS – WEST VILLAGE
Housing works at any branch always seems to have something interesting to make you pause and think if you should buy it. I’ve been to this branch more than a handful of times, and they have some of the nicest things, high-end brands, shoes, books, and kitchenware.

#5 ST LUKE’S THRIFT SHOP
Donation based selection of clothes, accessories, kitchenware. You never know what you’re going to find here. Many collectors donate their items here, so I was told by the staff. If anything, you’d be supporting a community. The staff were very friendly. The prices are quite high though I have to say, for used items.

#6 FUNNY PRETTY NICE
The store was empty and closed when I walked by. Not sure if it’s a temporary thing or permanent. But it is listed as still open for business on Google.
STOP BY FOR A BITE
When you feel hungry, make sure to stop by The Coppola Café. It is an Italian coffee shop with a selection of pastries and sandwiches. I have been here twice, and that says a lot about a New Yorker who doesn’t live in that neighborhood and likes to try new places. Everything is super fresh. Coffee tastes great. You can hear the Italian staff chatting in the background, they are very nice.
